Marx, Engels and Lenin would be rolling in their graves

Thank God Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Vladmir Lenin have passed on to a what we hope is a better place. Had they witnessed the May Day rallies in Lanka, especially that of the National People’s Power rally at Galle Face Green the trio would be turning somersaults in their graves. 

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake - progeny of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) founded by the late Rohana Wijeweera- called on the workers of the country NOT TO FIGHT for their right to provide their children two square meals a day.

He informed the large crowd gathered at Galle Face Green, that government had, even before workers raised the question of salary increases, raised wages. He warned workers and trade unions not to ask for what he referred to as ‘petty demands’!

The JVP has come a long way since its founding days. On 1, May 2025 when President Dissanayake demanded workers not to seek pay raises, government had agreed to raise the minimum basic salary in the public sector to Rs. 42,775/-. He called on the private sector to raise minimum monthly wages to Rs. 27,000/-. 

As of May 2025, tea and rubber plantation workers in Sri Lanka are being paid a minimum daily wage of Rs 1,700/- per day. In the main estates workers receive less than 26 days work per month. During periods of heavy rainfall they have less working days. Their wages drops even further.

Unfortunately our Marxist President and his JVP, the leading party in the National People’s Power (NPP) group, does not seem to be aware that it costs a family of four (father, mother and two children) over rupees one hundred thousand to have two square meals a day. This sum does not take into account funds needed for children’s education, travel, tuition classes and extra-curricular activities.

According to the president, he, his ministers and colleagues in parliament too are making sacrifices. Wikipedia estimates, in May 2025 the salary and benefits an average parliamentarian earns amounts to Rs. 270,000/-! We do not expect our leaders of state to live on a wage of an average public servant. But we demand, that our rulers realise it is difficult for ordinary folk to make do on this measly sum of Rs. 42,775/-.

To add to these burdens, government will raise the cost of electricity in keeping with an IMF demand. It is widely anticipated that electricity prices will be increased by a stunning 20 percent!

Unlike in earlier years, May Day this year was celebrated on a more sombre note. Most party May Day meetings were not preceded by processions. Perhaps because of the high cost of liquor, organisers were not able to provide participants with a quarter of alcohol and a packet of rice.

However, whatever the shortcomings of the NPP, three cheers to that political party. They increased wages, though hardly sufficient to keep body and soul together. 

The Samagi Jana Balaya (SJB) held its rally in Talawakele. It claimed the rally was to honour workers who brought in a large segment of our exchange earnings. It called on workers to defeat the NPP at local elections. The ‘honour’ turned out to be a left- handed compliment. The SJB leader left the meeting shortly after he completed his speech

Not to be outdone the workers gave that party and its leader a fitting reply, leaving the meeting in droves long before its scheduled closure. The meeting was brought to a closure with main speakers addressing vacant spaces. 

Namal Rajapaksa of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) forgot he was addressing a May Day rally and spoke of his father’s achievements while in power. He phoo-phooed the blame for the economic collapse of the country. Using Trumpian language, he called on candidates and leaders who left the SLPP to rejoin the party and make Lanka one of the fastest growing developing nations in the world.

It would appear these mainline political parties have by their actions alienated the people and shored up support for the government.

இலங்கையின் உழைக்கும் மக்கள் உட்பட பொது மக்கள், இந்த முறை இந்நாட்டின் ஊழல் மிக்க, சிறப்புரிமை அரசியலை முடிவுக்குக் கொண்டு வந்து, மக்கள்நேய ஆட்சியின் கீழ், நாடும் சமூகமும் ஆழமான, சாதமான மாற்றத்துடன் சர்வதேச தொழிலாளர் தினம் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.

ஒரு சில குடும்பங்கள் மற்றும் பரம்பரைகளால் 76 ஆண்டுகாலமாக மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட ஊழல் ஆட்சியை முடிவுக்குக் கொண்டுவந்து, இந்நாட்டின் அரசியலில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க திருப்புமுனையைக் குறிக்கும் வகையில், கடந்த ஜனாதிபதி மற்றும் பொதுத் தேர்தல்களில் இன, மத வேறுபாடின்றி இந்நாட்டின் அனைத்து மக்களும் செயல்பட்டனர்.

அந்த மக்கள் ஆணையின் அபிலாஷைகளை உணர்ந்து, நாட்டில் பொருளாதார, சமூக, அரசியல் ரீதியான திருப்பத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவதற்காக தேசிய மக்கள் சக்தி செயலாற்றுகிறது. ஊழல் நிறைந்த, சிறப்புரிமை அரசியல் முறைமையால் பாதாலத்திற்குள் தள்ளப்பட்ட இந்நாட்டின் பொருளாதாரத்தை, மீட்டெடுத்து நிலையான ஆரம்பத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவதில் தற்போது நாம் வெற்றி பெற்றுள்ளோம். இதன் தெளிவான அறிகுறிகள் இப்போது அனைவருக்கும் தெரிகின்றன.

அரசாங்கத்தின் முதல் வரவுசெலவுத்திட்டத்திலேயே வரலாற்றில் இதுவரை இல்லாத அளவுக்கு அரச ஊழியர்களின் குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பளத்தை குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அளவில் அதிகரித்தமை உட்பட விவசாயிகள், மீனவர்கள், இளைஞர்கள், பெண்கள் மற்றும் மாணவர்கள் மாத்திரமன்றி, உற்பத்தியாளர்கள், சிறிய வர்த்தகர்கள் மற்றும் பல்வேறு தொழில்களில் ஈடுபடுபவர்கள் உட்பட சமூகத்தின் அனைத்து தரப்பினர்களுக்கும் நன்மைகளை வழங்க நாங்கள் நடவடிக்கை எடுத்துள்ளோம். அதேபோன்று, தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் பிரச்சினைகளைத் தீர்ப்பதற்கும் அவர்களின் குடியுரிமை உரிமைகளை உறுதி செய்வதற்கும் நாம் நடவடிக்கை எடுத்துவருகின்றோம்.

நாளாந்தம் மாறிவரும் உற்பத்தி அற்றலுக்கு ஏற்ப நாம் அனுபவிக்கும் உரிமைகளில் ஒரு புதிய அத்தியாயத்தின் அவசியத்தை நாங்கள் காண்கிறோம். 1948 மனித உரிமைகள் நிகழ்ச்சி நிரலில் இல்லாத டிஜிட்டல் பிரவேச உரிமைகள், சுற்றுச்சூழல் உரிமைகள் உள்ளிட்ட மாறிவரும் அரசியல் கட்டமைப்புகளின் தோற்றம் மற்றும் உலக அமைதியை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட புதிய அபிவிருத்தித் தேவைகளுக்கமைய உலகளாவிய மனித உரிமைகள் பிரகடனத்தை இன்றைய சமூக கோருகிறது. இது குறித்த புரிதலுடன், தலையீடு செய்ய வேண்டியதன் அவசியத்தை சர்வதேச தொழிலாளர் தினமான இந்த சந்தர்ப்பத்தில், நாம் மீண்டும் நினைவூட்டுகிறோம்.

சர்வதேச புவிசார் அரசியல் மாற்றங்கள் மற்றும் சவால்களை எதிர்கொள்ளும் வகையில் ஸ்திரமான பொருளாதாரத்தை கட்டியெழுப்ப முயற்சிக்கும் இந்த நாட்டின் உழைக்கும் மக்களின் உரிமைகளை உறுதி செய்து, ஊழல் நிறைந்த சிறப்புரிமை அரசியலால் அழிக்கப்பட்ட நாட்டின் பொருளாதாரத்தை மீண்டும் கட்டியெழுப்பி “வளமான நாடு மற்றும் அழகான வாழ்க்கை” உருவாக்க சகோதரத்துவத்துடன் ஒன்றிணைந்து போராட இந்நாட்டின் உழைக்கும் மக்களுக்கு அழைப்பு விடுப்பதுடன் உழைக்கும் மக்களின் உரிமைகளைப் பாதுகாக்கும் அர்த்தமுள்ள சர்வதேச தொழிலாளர் தினத்திற்கு எனது வாழ்த்துகளைத் தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன்.
